San Diego, CA - Playing Around

Off to Coronado to visit Fred, my uncle. Coronado is a small peninsula in San Diego Bay where the Naval Base is. Fred was a Captain in the Navy so it’s natural he should live here. Gary wore his old clothes because he has a project to do: take down Fred’s gazebo which has shown the wear of several years and the recent big storms in San Diego. In fact, the canvas top had huge rips in it.

Here’s the boss supervising the work.

Posing with the ribbing.

Taking it all apart. Like Tinker Toys. Remember them? Gary used to have a set so he’s all ready for this project.

Ready to bind up and put in the trash pile.

Time for lunch - at Jack in the Box. Fred loved their tacos and, since Marilyn, his wife, can’t eat ‘hot’ foods, he saw his chance and took us. I’ll have to admit, luckily I had eaten a big breakfast. These tacos were not my favorite. But, don’t tell Fred. If he wants to go next year, when we’re in San Diego, sign me up.

BTW, did I mention that we had accompanied Fred and Marilyn to a play in town? Nope? Oops. Well, we did. they had play tickets and thought we might like to go. Of course. So Fred bought our tickets. Fun play. First play we’ve been to in a long time. Before hand we ate at a small sandwich shop connected to the theater. I think we all had paninis and they were especially good. And, so was the play. We really enjoyed it.

Here we are at dinner. Can you believe that Fred is 97 and Marilyn is 91? I can’t.

Well, today, after we had visited with Fred, we walked through Coronado and found the theater where we had seen it.

But, of course, if we’re in Coronado, we’ve got to walk the beach. Nice sunny day.

The Hotel Del Coronado, or familiarly known as the Hotel Del, had a sand castle maker outside.

We walked further down the beach to the hotel area. Now, notice that there are three positions here: one hotel has one side directly facing the beach, one is at an angle and one has an end facing the beach.

My thought here is: what are the parameters for how the builders position their hotels? Which position gets the most money? One with some rooms facing the beach with great views and and others on the back with no view at all? Or where every room has a little bit of a view? Or where some have a good view and the rooms on the opposite side have kind of a view? Which ratio between view and room price makes the most money?

There we are on a beautiful beach on a beautiful day and I’m calculating hotel prices. Hmmm. I need to get a life.

We have always liked hiking slot canyons but usually they are deeper than this.

Later on as we are walking back to our car we noticed that the marine layer is getting thicker.

We leave the hotel noticing these parking lot prices:

and this fake lawn. Almost looks like real grass doesn’t it?

Fun day. Lunch with Fred and a walk on the beach.
