Seneca Falls, NY - Lizzie C & Susie B.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B Anthony had so much to do with the Women’s Right To Vote at the end of the 19th Century and it all began here in Seneca Falls - where Stanton lived. This is what the house looks like now but it was much bigger when the Stanton family lived here. There was an office wing on the left and a huge 2-story kitchen wing in back. Stanton actually owned the house since her father had given it to her. Contrary to the usual custom in which anything that a woman owned went to her husband when they got married. Should they get divorced, he got it all along with the children and all she got was disgrace.

When the family moved to Seneca Falls, the house was dilapidated and falling down but Stanton became her own contractor and oversaw the workmen rebuilding it for them.

When the family moved to New York City, following her husband’s job, they sold most of the furniture so there is little inside. What is inside was either donated to the Historical Society which gave it to the National Historical Site or was given to relatives in New York who then donated it. The house itself has been refurbished to look like it did when the Stantons lived here.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton was the author of the Women’s Movement while Susan B Anthony was the spokesman. As much as Stanton felt trapped being in her home while Anthony was out in the world speaking, she loved her children and kept having more - 8 in total.

After touring her home we walked through Seneca Falls, noting that there are many beautiful home and great examples of differing styles of architecture.

We hadn’t stopped at the local ice cream shoppe yesterday since it was late but it was on our plans today. Can you imagine - closed on a Sunday?
