Forest City, IA - Frappez la Rue, Jacques

And, we’re off. Kind of. First we’ve got a stop in Fort Dodge, IA where my brother and some good friends live. We talked with my brother for a while about his new roof and he gave us some tomatoes from his garden which we are still enjoying.

Then off to see some friends who served us lunch: fried breaded tenderloins and home grown zucchini and home-made cookies. What better send-off could we wish for? They also RV and had just (2 days ago) gotten back from a one-month ‘tour’ of Michigan. We enjoyed their stories of places they saw, places they stayed and recommendations for things to do. But, then it was time to say good-bye. They are going to the Southeast this winter and we are heading for the Southwest. As with all friends who RV, everyone goes a different direction and it’s difficult to get together.

We do keep in touch regularly both by e-mail and phone so they are never far away from us. Two years ago we all met in Las Vegas and last year we all stayed in the Mesa area. It was so much fun to have them around to do things but this year they are headed to the Southeast where we will be headed next year. Oh, well, there’s always the phone.

We also made a stop at the Colfax cemetery where Gary’s father and mother are buried to remove our flowers. Someone, we think the VFW, had put these plaques near every person in the cemetery who had been in the service. Very nice.

After Fort Dodge we headed up towards Forest City where we had a return for Winnebago Customer Service. We parked in their Visitor Center and hooked up to electricity, just in time for dinner and a bit of relaxation.

The next day was Labor Day and we worked on little projects around the RV. When we awoke, the temperature was in the low 60’s, cold enough that I put on long pants and had hot cereal for breakfast. As the day wore on, the weather was just absolutely superb, warm, in the 70’s but without a bit of humidity in the air. We got a nice long walk in, 1 mile on a great bike trail which went by the Winnebago Rally grounds to the airport road then back again into town alongside the golf course and the city campground. Surprise, surprise, we found Scoopy Doo’s, the local ice cream joint with its hard ice cream in many flavors.

Finding it wasn’t hard, we had checked it out last summer when we had visited the factory for the factory tour. (Interestingly, neither we nor Shirley and Jerry, with whom we toured, had a Winnebago motorhome at the time. This summer, we both do - Shirley and Jerry have a Tour and we have a Journey.) At Scoopy Doo’s I learned a valuable lesson: that you can have 2 flavors - in 1 scoop. Moose Tracks and Blueberry Cheesecake. How perfect is that?
