Hughson, CA -Fun With Family

The beginning of our day began just as yesterday did. We awoke at the usual time, had breakfast and walked several blocks into town to get some coffee at the Bakery and Sweets Shop. We then walked back, enjoying the warm weather the sunshine and the walk through the town. We then relaxed and worked some in the RV. Betty came over and we sat in the RV chatting. Betty always has good stories about her life camping in their 5th wheel. One year they even went up to Alaska. Everyone I’ve spoken with about the trip to Alaska says it is one they will never forget.

She then gave us a tour of the town, pointing to almost every building and saying, ‘I worked there.’ Obviously she’s lived in Hughson most of her life. In fact, here’s her graduation picture from the local high school yearbook which we found in the local museum when she gave us a personal tour.

Yesterday we had relaxed in the RV had taken a short walk around town in the evening, admiring the many beautiful craftsmen homes there. We were also able to postpone our shopping but today we could not. We had to get some done since the next leg of our trip takes us through the middle of Nevada and we don’t expect to find many grocery stores. It was a boring afternoon since neither of us enjoys shopping one whit. So I’ll not bore you with the details.

In the afternoon, after our shopping, we went with Betty to visit the local museum. It’s just being moved to a new location and is not ready for tours but Betty got us in the back door and we had our run of the place. It is in an old bank building and had a near Hughson mural on the wall.

It also had loads on the history of Hughson and we enjoyed exploring. Then Susan joined us and we went out to her home. Susan is Betty’s oldest daughter and lives on what we in Iowa would call a hobby farm, though theirs is no hobby but their livlihood. Susan’s husband, Troy, is a bee keeper and is kept busy in the spring when all the farmers are planting and need polination. They have several burros on their farmstead. By the way, the one on the right is pregnant.

Note how the burros have eaten the fencing around their area. The fence was like this for about 40 feet.

Here are Susan, Betty and Troy in Susan and Troy’s home.

We had been invited to Betty’s for dinner and she was having her son, David and his wife, Connie along with Audrey, Betty’s daughter, and Judy and Sibyl. Since it was a warm evening we ate out side on her patio which her son, David did for her.

Connie has actually just retired from her job as a cement truck driver, a job which she’s had for quite a while. Certainly, she’s been a female in a male-dominated field for a long time and a real trend setter.
