AJ, AZ - Our Home is in the Shop

Because our ‘home’ is going into the shop for the day, we awoke early, got ready ourselves and readied the RV for travel (well, it’s only going about 50’ from the shop driveway into the shop garage area, but the process is the same) and went into the shop to discuss the issues with the manager.

Now, Gary, who is not a gear head, but who had done lots of studying and crawling around under the RV (see his birthday picture) has compiled a list of what needs to be oiled and lubed and filter changed and thus forth for our particular RV. While he was crawling around under the RV he took pictures and compared what had been done to what should have been done and - voila - discovered that some of the joints had not been oiled and lubed. So, how far down the road could we have gone before our joints froze and we needed to replace them - all because we expected them to have been lubed as we were told they were, but they weren’t?

We belong to several chat rooms for our model of RV and this has happened to others. You take your RV or your car into the shop and ask for routine maintenance. You expect that it was all done and done thoroughly. You don’t expect them to miss a joint or to not replace a filter. But they do. Gary is now compiling a list so that he can take it in and ask them to do these specific things, not what they ‘routinely’ do.

Today, they are going to do the things they missed before, install our new microwave (if it gets here) and install the new rear level. We can’t sit in the RV while it is in the shop and their waiting room has no tables or desks for work. Thus, we decided we’d go out for breakfast and then to the local library to work. We first wanted to go to a restaurant we had gone to before on our way into town but it was 17 miles away. 17 miles to and 17 miles back and how many gallons of gas is that at $3.13 a gallon? Hey, how about eating at a restaurant in town so we don’t have to spend so much money getting there?

Oops, the library is closed since this is January 2nd. Let’s go to Barnes and Noble but that is also about 22 miles away and the same miles per gallon equation comes into play. Hey, how about sitting in a local Starbucks? So, here we are, drinking tea and working on our computers.

Our next decision is what to do when the RV gets fixed. Our new microwave is arriving via UPS and is expected in today. Maybe the tooth fairy will come today also. What if it doesn’t and we need to spend another day here in the shop parking lot? We had planned to go to Organ Pipe NM in southern Arizona and stay until Thursday when we leave for Palm Springs. If our RV isn’t ready, we won’t be able to leave until Tuesday, will get to Organ Pipe Tuesday afternoon and have to leave Thursday morning. What is the point? So, we’ve decided to head right for Palm Springs and stop half way there in Quartzsite, AZ for Wednesday night.
